About The School
Nelson Street Boys’ R.C. School was established in the year, 1899. The school is situated in “Down Town,” Port of Spain, just a few metres south of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Nelson Street Boys’ R.C. was once an academic “Giant,” and was the preferred choice of many parents for their sons’ education. This is evidenced in our distinguished alumni which includes the likes of : Mr George Chambers, former Prime Minister; Sir Solomon Hochoy, First Governor General; Father Michael Makhan; Dr Alvin Hilliare, Governor General of Central Bank; Professor Courtenay Bartholomew, learned Physician and Scientist and; business icon Dr Anthony Sabga, just to name a few.
Tragedy struck on April 25th, 1976 when the school was destroyed by fire. The school population was graciously housed by the Nelson Street Girls’ R.C. School under a shift arrangement that lasted for 26 years. We operated on the afternoon shift from 12:30-5:00 pm and saw a marked decline in our enrolment.
On October 2nd, 2002 after many years of operating under very challenging conditions, we realized our long-held dream of occupying our own school once more.
Nelson Street Boys’ R.C. School has the capacity to hold 5 00 students. The school has three levels and there is a very small area on the ground floor for students to run and play. The perimeter of this area is covered with a metal grill.
The school has 14 classrooms, a Reading Room, Audio Visual Room, Computer Lab, Dr. Antony Sabga Science Room, Mr. Lance Lashley Library, Student Support Diagnostic Room, Pan Theatre, Prayer Room, Drumming Room, Staff Room, Sick Bay, Lunch Room and Cafeteria.
Presently, our catchment areas are Quarry Street, John John, Nelson Street, Beetham Gardens, Laventille, Morvant and Sea Lots.
At present we have a staff of 14 teachers. The teachers of our school have committed themselves to arriving to school early to assist students who are not reading at their current level. This literacy drive began in 2018.
Our school is very fortunate to have a dedicated Social Worker, Guidance Officer and Special Education Teacher and Supervisor. We are also blessed to have many cooperate sponsors willing to invest into the school to ensure the students have a well-rounded education and learn in a safe and secure school environment, despite the many challenges the student faces daily.
